K: Can you describe your experience with Maths before joining Elevatetuts? What challenges did you face?
R: Before joining Elevatetuts the main challenge I encountered was the inconsistency in my Maths marks. My marks would fluctuate like a cubic graph sometimes I’d get 80% and other times I’d get 40%.
K: How did your tutor's approach and teaching style help you build confidence in Maths?
R: She would first explain the concept we’d be doing in depth this helped me in understanding the work better and getting a different perspective. From then on we’d practice the work together which helped me see all the different ways that specific topic could be asked.
K: How did you feel when you started consistently getting distinctions in Maths?
R: When I’d get a distinction for Maths I’d be so happy knowing that my hard work would actually pay off.
K: Can you attribute any part of your success in Maths to the tutoring you received? If so, how?
R: The tutoring I got helped a lot in understanding the difficult questions in maths and also helped me in getting consistent results all year round.
K: How has achieving a distinction in Maths and the other subjects impacted your future plans and goals?
R: Getting a distinction in Maths, Life Orientation and Life Science has given me hope that I’m going to get accepted into the course that I want to do. Also getting these distinctions has allowed me to qualify for bursaries.
K: Do you think tutoring played a significant role in your improved understanding and performance in Maths? Why or why not?
R: Tutoring has played a significant role in my understanding and performance in Maths as due to the way my tutor explained things to me led me to understand a variety of topics which lead to an increase in my academic results.
K: Would you recommend tutoring to other students struggling with Maths or other subjects? Why?
R: Yes I would recommend tutoring to others as it helps with understanding the work but more importantly I believe tutoring teaches a person which study methods work for them which would lead to them improving academically.
K: How has your experience with Elevatetuts impacted your self-confidence and perseverance?
R: Being a student for Elevatetuts has given a huge confidence boost as my results actually started being consistent, being consistent with my results actually motivated me to thrive to do better and to continue to work during times where I’d have no motivation to study or during tough times.
K: What skills or values did you develop during your time with Elevatetuts that you'll carry with you in the future?
R: Over my many years with Elevatetuts I’ve learnt that you can never wrong with repeating what you’ve studied multiple times and hard work
K: What advice would you like to give to anyone in high school reading this
R: The biggest piece of advice I’d give to anyone is to listen in class, ask questions and the biggest one for me is work hard. I believe through hard work and dedication anyone can improve their marks. When studying for maths I’d do every question from every activity in the textbook to get the best possible understanding of the whole section and it’d help in practicing the more difficult questions cause the textbook I used had higher order questions at the end of each exercise. After that I’d do a minimum of 6 past papers. I never thought I’d get a distinction for Life Science as I’d usually get 50% or sometimes scrape a 60% during my grade 11 year. It is possible to improve your results I went from getting 22% for physics in term 2 of grade 11 to 70% in my matric final, you just need to work hard, listen in class and practice many past papers once you understand everything you need to know then I promise you will improve your marks just push yourself past your limits. Also I’d recommend a person to be patient as improving takes time so don’t feel bad if you don’t see immediate improvement just keep working hard and eventually everything will fall into place.
